In 2011, the Historical Museum of the city of Pechory received the honorary title of a branch of the State Museum and Reserve "Izborsk". Its history goes back to the last century. The museum activists who began collecting historical exhibits were members of the Russian Cultural and Educational Society, which was formed in the city of Petseri, this name was Pechory from the twenties to the forties of the last century, when, according to the Tartu Peace Treaty, the village was part of Estonia.
The museum building is not a very large two-story mansion, it is part of the Cathedral Square ensemble. It is located on the left side of the Holy Gates, which let believers into the Holy Dormition Pskov-Pechory Monastery. Since the official opening of the exposition in 1949, work has not stopped, which is associated with the acquisition of the main fund of the museum.
Today, 15 thousand exhibits are stored in the museum, which form the main, as well as scientific and auxiliary museum fund. The collection of archeology is distinguished by a wide variety and uniqueness of the exhibits. The exposition includes items dating from the Neolithic era, cultural monuments of the Russian Middle Ages and the Slavs. Rare exhibits include funerary urns from burial mounds, weapons, and jewelry.
The collection of written monuments includes photographs, documents, the Gospel of 1674, decrees and letters. The fine art collection is also ready to boast of unique exhibits. It includes drawings by N. Roerich, which were donated to the museum by the abbot of the monastery, Archimandrite Alipy Voronov, a painting by an unknown artist dated 1810, conveying the beauty of the waterfall, ethnographic sketches of the townspeople: Seto and Russians dressed in national costumes, as well as a collection of works by Shnyavin A.F. ., Mikstais L. A., Melnikov P. D. and other artists.
The collection of items made of precious metals is of great value in the exposition of the museum. It includes Russian jewelry, Seto, ancient coins.
The basis of the collection of costumes and fabrics were things that vividly characterize the ethnographic composition of the population living in the Pechersk region. In the collection of weapons, guests will be able to get acquainted with samples of edged, firearms, used in different centuries, collected on the lands of the Pechersk region.
Most of the exhibits belonging to the collection of porcelain and ceramics are representatives of a rather late period. Basically, these are products made on the territory of the city, in its environs: bowls, jars, pots, vessels. The collection of samovars will be a godsend for an inquisitive tourist. There are about two dozen products in it, differing in size, shape or decor.
Of no less interest is the collection of the Soviet period. Here are collected clothes, furniture, household appliances, household items of the era. Diverse, rich and interesting collections made it possible to form a unique exposition of the museum, which reveals to the guests of the city its entire history, leading from the Neolithic to the present. The chronological principle of the location of the exhibition halls allows the visitor to plunge into deep antiquity and gradually approach our days.
Not the last role in the activities of the museum is assigned to excursion services, scientific and educational work.
